Irlanda del Nord, 1981. Il Primo Ministro Margaret Thatcher ha abolito lo statuto speciale di prigioniero politico e considera ogni carcerato paramilitare della resistenza irlandese alla stregua di un criminale comune. I detenuti appartenenti all'IRA danno perciò il via, nella prigione di Maze, allo sciopero "della coperta" e a quello dell'igiene, cui segue una dura repressione da parte delle forze dell'ordine. Il primo marzo, Bobby Sands, leader del movimento, decreta allora l'inizio di uno sciopero totale della fame.
