Contrapposta ai Tributi ben allenati che si sono preparati agli Hunger Games per tutta la vita, Katniss è costretta a contare sul suo brillante istinto oltre che sull'addestramento di un precedente vincitore dei giochi, l'alcolizzato Haymitch Abernathy. Per tornare a casa al Distretto 12, Katniss deve fare scelte impossibili nell'arena, che metteranno sulla bilancia la sopravvivenza contro l'umanità e la vita e contro l'amore.
