Whitby, Inghilterra, agosto 1897. La nave mercantile russa Demeter si incaglia sugli scogli e dell'equipaggio non c'è traccia. L'unica traccia è il diario di bordo del capitano Eliot che narra gli eventi precedenti all'ammaraggio. Porto di Varna, Bulgaria, 4 settimane prima. La Demeter sta per partire ma si trova a corto di uomini. Al gruppo si unisce il dottor Clemens, un inglese che ha appena salvato la vita a Toby, il nipote del capitano. Tuttavia durante la traversata iniziano a verificarsi dei fenomeni strani. Viene trovata una giovane donna, Anna, nella stiva, in pessime condizioni di salute e inizialmente è considerata come una clandestina poi tutto il bestiame muore misteriosamente. All'inizio si pensa che la causa sia un'epidemia ma la verità è molto più spaventosa di quanto immaginano e notte dopo notte i membri della ciurma iniziano ad essere uccisi uno alla volta. I superstiti, per salvarsi, devono far affondare la nave perché una mortale e sanguinaria creatura si trova a bordo dell'imbarcazione e non si fermerà fino a quando non saranno tutti morti.
