Nell'agosto del 1955, il quattordicenne afroamericano Emmett Till lascia Chicago per fare visita al resto della famiglia nel Mississippi. Qui, dopo aver incautamente parlato con una ragazza bianca, viene prelevato in piena notte da un gruppo di persone sia bianche sia nere e barbaramente linciato. Giorni dopo la sparizione, il suo cadavere viene ritrovato nelle acque di un fiume: il film segue la storia della battaglia legale della madre del ragazzo, Mamie Till, che pretenderà di essere fotografata accanto al volto orribilmente deformato del figlio e di comparire sulla copertina di una rivista per sensibilizzare la popolazione di fronte alla violenza razziale nel sud. Gli assassini bianchi di Emmett saranno assolti, ma la battaglia di Mamie sarà alla base dell'affermazione del movimento per i diritti civili negli Stati Uniti.
