Ramis, regista fino ad ora di filmetti demenziali a basso quoziente intellettuale, è stato baciato dalla fortuna. Infatti ha ricevuto il soggetto di Danny Rubin che è quanto di più paradossale e originale sia capitato negli ultimi anni. Bill Murray è un insopportabile meteorologo in trasferta a Punxsutawney. Nella ridente cittadina montana sta infatti per essere celebrata la "giornata della marmotta". È in tandem con una produttrice, Andie MacDowell, piuttosto conformista. Per uno scherzo del destino il protagonista si trova a dover rivivere la medesima giornata all'infinito. Pur essendo comico il film è anche una riflessione sull'alienazione e sul malessere della società.
