Vede protagonista il giovane Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), un timido ma intelligente ragazzo di 13 anni, che viene rapito da un sadico assassino (Ethan Hawke) che lo rinchiude in un seminterrato insonorizzato, dove le urla servono a poco.Quando un telefono disconnesso inizia a squillare sul muro, Finney scopre di poter sentire le voci delle precedenti vittime dell'assassino. Dall'altra parte della cornetta ci sono i bambini scomparsi nel 1978 nella cittadina del Colorado e sono decisi a fare in modo che ciò che è successo a loro non accada a Finney, aiutandolo a fuggire. Nel frattempo Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), la sorella del ragazzo, fa dei strani sogni che la inducono a credere che suo fratello sia in grave pericolo...
