Racconta la storia di una famiglia i cui già precari equilibri vengono messi ancor più a dura prova da un caso irrisolto riguardante la sparizione di un bambino di 11 anni. Il capofamiglia, il detective Greg Harper (Jon Tenney), viene incaricato di risolvere l’intricato enigma, che si scopre presto essere simile ad altri casi di rapimento avvenuti in passato. Nel frattempo, eventi misteriosi mettono in agitazione gli altri componenti di casa Harper, composta dalla moglie di Greg, Jackie (Helen Hunt), e dal figlio adolescente Connor (Judah Lewis). Molti oggetti infatti iniziano a scomparire, la televisione si accende da sola e qualcuno lascia entrare un tecnico in casa mentre tutti i membri della famiglia sono assenti. Ben presto, la famiglia capisce di essere in pericolo, ma la fredda e dura verità sul male che angoscia gli Harper si rivelerà più sconvolgente di quanto avrebbero mai potuto immaginare...
