Bana interpreterà un giornalista radiofonico di New York in disgrazia mentre Gervais sarà il suo tecnico. I due hanno avuto il compito di fare un reportage su una ribellione in Ecuador e così fingono di essere stati rapiti mentre riportano l'accaduto da un nascondiglio confortevole sopra un ristorante di Manhattan. Man mano che la loro cronaca fittizia continua ad intensificarsi, anche le reazioni di tutto il mondo riguardanti la loro situazione si inaspriscono, tanto che li obbligano a recarsi davvero in Equador per trovare i ribelli di cui hanno tanto parlato nella loro cronaca.
