La storia è ambientata negli anni '50. Due quattordicenni vivono ancora una religiosità ancestrale, preconciliare,: attorno a loro tutto è sacro e tutto è peccato, si teme l'inferno, aleggia nell'aria la paura del diavolo. Uno dei due muore di malaria e la gente si convince che sia accaduto perché ha fatto cadere l'ostia durante la prima comunione e l'ha pestata. L'altro non si rassegna di aver perso l'amico del cuore e fa di tutto per contattare un essere deforme che si pensa abbia rapporti col diavolo.
