A Los Angeles un prete cattolico scopre in una vecchia Chiesa abbandonata, una specie di enorme teca, in cui si agita in permanenza un liquido verdastro. Si mette così d'accordo con Birack, uno scienziato cinese ed una équipe di giovani studiosi e si installano in loco, con computer e strumentazioni varie. A tener conto di quanto si legge in un antico libro, parzialmente scritto in copto, tutto concerne il Maligno e la sua terribile forza, ora imprigionata in quel contenitore, collocato su di una specie di altare.
