Se la strada potesse parlare, il film diretto da Barry Jenkins, è ambientato negli anni anni 70 a New York, più esattamente nel quartiere di Harlem.Uniti da sempre, la diciannovenne Tish (KiKi Layne) e il fidanzato Alonzo, detto Fonny (Stephan James), sognano un futuro insieme.Quando Fonny viene ingiustamente arrestato per un crimine che non ha commesso, Tish, che ha da poco scoperto di essere incinta, fa di tutto per scagionarlo, con il sostegno incondizionato di parenti e genitori.Senza più un compagno al suo fianco, Tish deve affrontare l'inaspettata prospettiva della maternità. Mentre le settimane diventano mesi, la ragazza non perde la speranza, supportata dalla propria forza interiore e dall'affetto della famiglia, disposta a tutto per il bene della figlia e del futuro genero.
