Nel 700 dopo Cristo, l'Europa settentrionale è divisa in due differenti parti: a nord dei fiumi si sono stabiliti i Frisoni, i Sassoni e i Danesi, mentre a sud si sono stanziati i Franchi. Questi ultimi hanno uno scopo molto chiaro in mente: conquistare l'Europa usando il cristianesimo come arma per sottomettere i pagani. Il primo obiettivo è la conquista della zona commerciale più importante, governata dal re frisone Aldigisl. Approfittando di un rituale, i Franchi attaccano, uccidono il re e gettano in mare suo figlio Redbad. Riuscito a sopravvivere, Redbad coltiverà il sogno di riprendersi ciò che gli è stato tolto e per farlo dovrà unire un'armata vichinga invincibile.
