Wes Anderson torna all'animazione con la sperimentata tecnica a passo uno (vedi Fantastic Mr Fox), a partire questa volta da una storia originale ambientata in una dimensione distopica, in cui uomini e animali antropomorfi convivono. Nel futuro 2037, la crescita incontrollata dei cani e la diffusione di una misteriosa “influenza canina” impone al sindaco della città di Megasaki, nell'arcipelago giapponese, di adottare una drastica misura d'emergenza: mettere in quarantena tutti i cani del Paese, segregandoli su un'isola destinata all'accumulo di rifiuti e immondizia.
