Reduce dal fallimento di ben tre romanzi, sbeffeggiato dai vicini e rifiutato dagli editori, con un colpo da maestro Dickens trae ispirazione dalla pagina immacolata che lo spaventa, e inizia a scrivere di tetti imbiancati e alberi di Natale. Isolandosi dal mondo, si mette all'opera tra i contrattempi della famiglia e del padre (Jonathan Pryce). In sole sei settimane gli ambienti si popolano di anziani in camicia da notte e fluttuanti ospiti indesiderati, la storia di A Christmas Carol prende vita. L'uomo che inventò il Natale è il racconto - sospeso tra realtà e immaginazione - della stesura dell'eterna fiaba invernale, la nascita dei personaggi iconici e delle indimenticabili frasi culto.
