Durante un viaggio d'affari in Kenya, Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) si ammala gravemente di poliomielite e resta per mesi incollato a un letto di ospedale, lontano dalla famiglia e dall'amata moglie Diana (Claire Foy). Proprio Diana, preoccupata per l'aspetto sempre più cupo e abbatutto del marito, decide di strapparlo alla sorveglianza ininterrotta di medici e infermieri, e riportarlo a casa nel Derbyshire. Grazie anche alla rivoluzionaria sedia a rotelle dotata di respiratore, progettata su misura dall'amico Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Cavendish ritrova la vitalità perduta e inizia a viaggiare per il mondo come paladino per i diritti dei disabili.
