Se chiedi a Norman Opphennaimer quale sia il suo mestiere, la risposta sarà "se le serve qualcosa io gliela trovo!". Norman (Richard Gere) è dunque un mercante di promesse, un trafficante di favori, un sistematico investitore di aspettative a lungo termine; la sua incredibile vita è una ragnatela di relazioni superflue, volte ad acquistare fama e potere a spese altrui, senza ombra di parassitismo, ma come riscossione di un antico debito non ancora saldato. In poche parole: il navigato affarista di New York fiuta una necessità, poi la soddisfa con l'astuzia e la lungimiranza che lo contraddistinguono. Quando Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi), un giovane politico che alcuni anni prima ha ricevuto la solidale "consulenza" di Norman, viene eletto Primo Ministro, il giorno che l'uomo ha tanto desiderato sembra finalmente arrivato. Ma sarà davvero come lo immaginava?
