Dopo aver perduto in un incidente d'auto la figlia e il marito, compositore di successo, Julie (Binoche) tenta di ricominciare da zero sbarazzandosi di tutto quel che la lega al passato, senza elaborare nemmeno un po' il lutto. Aiutata dal caso, è risucchiata dentro la vita e decide di amare il prossimo. Completa una partitura incompiuta del marito (un “Concerto per l'Europa”). Sceglie per il “Memento” del coro il tredicesimo capitolo della prima lettera di Paolo ai Corinti. 1° film della trilogia sui colori della bandiera francese (blu = libertà): coincide interamente con la protagonista (Kieslowski: “Voglio filmare la tua intimità”) che, tolta una breve scena, è sempre presente sullo schermo. Gli altri personaggi sono funzioni narrative più che figure con vita propria.
