David Spritz (Nicolas Cage) ha un lavoro che gli piace e che lo fa guadagnare bene: è l’uomo che annuncia le previsioni del tempo in un telegiornale di Chicago. Le persone che lo circondano, però, non lo rispettano perché pensano che venga pagato troppo per svolgere un compito che tutti reputano molto facile. Il primo a pensarla così è il padre di David, Robert Spritzel (Michael Caine), un famoso scrittore vincitore del Premio Pulitzer. Per Dave non è facile vivere all’ombra di un padre così ingombrante che, per altro, lo giudica incapace non solo professionalmente ma anche come genitore dei suoi due figli.
