Negli Stati Uniti, il nuovo direttore del carcere di Wakefeld, Henry Brubaker, che prima di assumere l'incarico aveva trascorso alcuni giorni fra i prigionieri in incognito, fingendosi un detenuto, per conoscere le reali condizioni di prigionia, cerca poco a poco di riformare la vita del carcere, migliorando le condizioni dei reclusi e mettendo fine alla corruzione degli impiegati e delle guardie carcerarie.
