A New York per il suo lavoro, Neal Page conta di rientrare a Chicago per il "Giorno del Ringraziamento" dove è atteso da moglie, due figli, genitori e suoceri. Ma una tempesta di neve imbianca Chicago bloccandone l'aeroporto, molti voli sono cancellati e Page, sia pure a malincuore, non può che imbarcarsi per Wichita. Lo attende un vero calvario tra aerei incerti, treni che si guastano, noleggio di auto che vanno a fuoco, furto di danaro e carte di credito, più due notti insonni in alberghetti di fortuna. Non bastasse, gli è accanto in questa odissea l'invadente Del Griffith, un petulante ma generoso rappresentante di commercio, anche lui con destinazione Chicago.
