Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) è un giornalista di mezza tacca che dopo la fine del suo matrimonio si reca in Medio Oriente affamato di scoop. Lì incontra Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney), da oltre vent'anni membro di un reparto segreto dell'esercito statunitense che si prefigge di utilizzare facoltà paranormali in campo bellico. Scopre così che l'esercito e il modo di combattere sono cambiati: il bizzarro reparto si prefigge di utilizzare poteri psichici per poter leggere i pensieri del nemico, passare attraverso solide mura e perfino uccidere una capra semplicemente fissandola. Quando il fondatore del reparto Bill Django (Jeff Bridges) sparisce, Cassidy intraprende una missione per trovarlo e Bob si unirà a lui incuriosito dalle sue inverosimili storie.
