Trama:
Il protagonista è un uomo sui quarant'anni, che si sforza di fare un bilancio di tutta la vita precedente; cerca cioè di capire che cosa di valido c'è stato nella sua esistenza. Dunque sullo schermo vanno avanti di pari passo tre storie. La prima è costituita dai ricordi dell'infanzia; la seconda è composta dalle cronache di avvenimenti storici "vissuti e compresi" sotto una angolazione prettamente individuale; la terza è formata da ragionamenti filosofici che sono un po' la sintesi di tutto il discorso" (Andrej Tarkovskij).Aleksej, il protagonista del film, è costretto a letto da un misterioso male.
