Jann Mardenborough è un gamer specializzato nel simulatore di corse automobilistiche Gran Turismo. È figlio di un ex giocatore di calcio che ha militato nella squadra di Cardiff, la città del Galles dove vive insieme al fratello. Quest'ultimo cerca di seguire le orme paterne mentre Jann è considerato una sorta di delusione dal padre. Avrà però l'occasione di rifarsi quando la Nissan lancerà un concorso tra i giocatori di Gran Turismo, per reclutare nuovi piloti da far correre in vere corse automobilistiche. Il rischioso progetto di marketing è un'idea di Danny Moore, che non trova un tecnico disposto ad affiancarlo finché non si rassegna a rivolgersi all'ex campione Jack Salter. Sarà lui ad allenare Jann e gli altri gamer, sottoponendoli prima a una rigida selezione e poi aiutandoli a dare il meglio di sé in pista.
