Nel prossimo futuro il riscaldamento climatico ha causato guerre, reso le ore diurne quasi invivibili e innalzato il livello dei mari allagando le città costiere come Miami. Qui opera Nick Bannister che, insieme alla ex commilitona Emily Watts, ha un'impresa con una tecnologia che permette di rivivere le memorie. In un mondo senza futuro la gente si rivolge al passato, dice, e il suo sistema olografico offre un'esperienza molto migliore di altre più economiche tecnologie (ma l'impresa comunque non se la passa bene). Quando a lui si rivolge la bellissima e raffinata Mae, cantante in un night che ha perso le chiavi di casa, per Nick è un colpo di fulmine. La relazione però finisce improvvisamente quando Mae, senza ragione apparente, scompare dopo aver svuotato il proprio appartamento.
