È la storia del pilota da corsa Danny (Milo Ventimiglia), raccontata con gli occhi del suo cane, il Golden Retriever Enzo. Tra i due è stato subito feeling. Sin da cucciolo, Enzo ha imparato le lezioni di vita del suo proprietario, vivendo passo dopo passo accanto a lui; lo ha visto correre in pista, insegnare a nuovi piloti e innamorarsi di Eva (Amanda Seyfried). Enzo è il migliore amico, il compagno ideale e il testimone di nozze di Danny, i due insieme hanno affrontato le gioie e i dolori, cercando di sorridere sempre senza mai abbattersi.
Il cane è lì a ogni vittoria sul podio o quando Eva dà alla luce la piccola Zoe, la figlia di Danny, ma è anche un sostegno morale durante le sconfitte del suo padrone e in uno dei momenti più tragici della sua vita, quando l'uomo deve lottare con la malattia e la morte, che improvvisamente irrompono e destabilizzano la sua esistenza. Mentre Danny cerca di superare i tristi eventi e i conseguenti ostacoli, il suo fedele amico è sempre pronto, a suo modo, a ricordargli che non deve smettere di combattere. Rimanendo al suo fianco, Enzo lo porterà a credere di nuovo in se stesso, ma neanche una forte amicizia, come la loro, può durare per sempre...
