Robin di Loxley viene chiamato a servire nella terza crociata in Terra santa e lo ritroviamo insieme ai suoi commilitoni in una città in rovina, bloccato sotto il fuoco nemico di una potentissima balestra automatica. Robin sarà incaricato di neutralizzarla e in questa operazione si imbatte in un abile arciere e guerriero, che avrebbe la meglio su di lui se non venisse colpito alle spalle da Guy, il capitano di Robin. Quando questi minaccia di uccidere il figlio del prigioniero, Robin non riesce a stare a guardare e si mette in mezzo. La sua diserzione è punita con il ritorno a casa in disgrazia dove lo aspetta una Loxley caduta in rovina. Inoltre Robin è stato dato per morto da almeno due anni e la sua amata Marian si è trovata un nuovo compagno, Will Scarlet. Il tutto mentre il pugno di ferro dello Sceriffo di Nottingham, stretto alleato della Chiesa cattolica, spreme sempre più duramente un popolo ormai esasperato.
