Storia di una ladra di libri è ambientato nella Germania della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Protagonista è Liesel (Sophie Nélisse), una vivace e coraggiosa ragazzina affidata dalla madre incapace di mantenerla, ad Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush), un uomo buono e gentile, e alla sua irritabile moglie Rosa (Emily Watson). Scossa dalla tragica morte del fratellino, avvenuta solo pochi giorni prima, e intimidita dai "genitori” appena conosciuti, Liesel fatica ad adattarsi sia a casa che a scuola, dove viene derisa dai compagni di classe perché non sa leggere. Con grande determinazione, è tuttavia decisa a cambiare la situazione e trova un valido alleato nel suo papà adottivo che, nel corso di lunghe notti insonni, le insegna a leggere il suo primo libro, Il manuale del becchino, rubato al funerale del fratello. L’amore di Liesel per la lettura e il crescente attaccamento verso la sua nuova famiglia si rafforzano grazie all’amicizia con un ebreo di nome Max (Ben Schnetzer) che i suoi genitori nascondono nello scantinato e che condivide con lei la passione per i libri incoraggiandola ad approfondire le sue capacità di osservazione.
