Il giovane e ribelle Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) è ossessionato dalla misteriosa scomparsa di suo padre Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), un tempo noto come il più grande esperto sviluppatore di videogiochi del mondo. Indagando su uno strano segnale proveniente da un vecchio videogioco arcade creato dal padre, Sam si ritrova catapultato in un mondo virtuale dove Kevin è rimasto intrappolato per oltre 20 anni.
