Nel 1869, vicino a Brantford, nel New Hampshire, due ragazzi seppelliscono un forziere. Un secolo dopo, nel 1969, Alan Parrish sente il suono di tamburi tribali provenire da un cantiere. Incuriosito, trova il baule, scopre al suo interno un gioco da tavolo chiamato Jumanji e lo porta a casa.Alan mostra alla sua amica Sarah la scoperta e la invita a giocare. Ad ogni lancio di dadi, le pedine di muovono da sole e appare un messaggio criptico nella sfera di cristallo al centro del tabellone. Sarah legge il primo messaggio e sente un suono inquietante. Alan poi lancia involontariamente i dadi e la sfera gli comunica di aspettare in una giungla fino a quando qualcuno tira un cinque o un otto: viene quindi risucchiato nel gioco.
