Di fronte all'avanzata dell'esercito tedesco e all'imminente invasione della Gran Bretagna, Churchill è chiamato a decidere tra la tutela del Paese in nome di una pace apparente e temporanea e la difesa dei propri ideali di autonomia e libertà. Accanto a lui, indaffarate nel dietro le quinte della storia, la moglie Clementine (Kristin Scott Thomas) e la segretaria personale Elizabeth Nel (Lily James). Nel cast anche Ben Mendelsohn nei panni dell'amato sovrano Re Giorgio VI, e Ronald Pickup in veste di Primo ministro uscente, Neville Chamberlain.
