Nella città di Oslo quando i primi fiocchi cadono, alcune donne spariscono nel nulla e misteriosi pupazzi di neve compaiono a sorvegliare le strade. L'uomo di neve segue le indagini del detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender), a capo di una squadra speciale della polizia di Oslo incaricata di investigare su una serie di omicidi locali. Dopo l'ennesima sparizione, avvenuta durante la prima nevicata dell'anno, Hole scopre interessanti collegamenti con alcuni casi irrisolti vecchi di vent'anni: la cornice invernale, la vittima designata, il pupazzo di neve sulla scena del crimine, tutti elementi che richiamano i metodi di un elusivo serial killer. Con l’aiuto di una giovane e brillante recluta, il poliziotto dovrà unire i puntini per svelare il disegno nascosto dietro le frequenti sparizioni, prima che la neve torni a imbiancare le strade e cancelli ogni traccia dell'assassino.
