La giovane studiosa Helen Lyle, ricercatrice presso l'università dell'Illinois e moglie del professor Trevor Lyle, docente di antropologia, è sorpresa nel constatare quanto il mito urbano di Cyndyman, un leggendario negro, autore misterioso di efferati delitti sia radicato nell'immaginario di non pochi giovani studenti. Decisa a sfatare tale mito, si reca a Chicago con la sua assistente Bernadette Walsh, ad esplorare nella zona malfamata di Cabrini Green, uno stabile labirintico in estremo degrado, abitato unicamente da negri in miseria, dentro il quale, stando alla leggenda, proprio un geniale ritrattista negro si era innamorato un secolo prima della giovane donna che stava ritraendo su commissione suscitando l'ira del padre della ragazza che...
