Un gruppo di scienziati americani che sta esplorando l'Antartide a bordo di un elicottero viene costretto da una tempesta ad atterrare in una cavità protetta dalle nebbie. Ben presto si rendono conto di essere atterrati in una zona vulcanica, la cui attività fa sì che a quella latitudine si siano mantenute per millenni condizioni climatiche tropicali. La radio è fuori portata e l'elicottero necessita di riparazioni. Il tempo non è molto perché il resto della spedizione dovrà partire prima dell'inizio del periodo più freddo. Ma il peggio deve ancora arrivare: quella terra non è disabitata...
