Charles Duchemin, direttore di una guida gastronomica conosciuta in tutto il mondo, e che ha l'abitudine di provare in incognito i ristoranti francesi, si prepara ad andare in pensione dopo la pubblicazione della nuova edizione della sua Guida Duchemin. Viene però a conoscenza dei piani di Jacques Tricatel, amministratore delegato di una catena di ristorazione industriale, i cui cibi preconfezionati puzzano di frode. Per smascherarlo agli occhi della Francia, Duchemin convince il redattore di una famosa rubrica televisiva a organizzargli un incontro faccia a faccia con lui. Tricatel corre ai ripari dapprima tentando di screditare Duchemin, cui una malaugurata indigestione ha tolto il senso del gusto, e poi provando a sbarazzarsi per sempre di lui.
