Nell'estate del 1966 ad Hell's Kitchen, nell'East Side di Manhattan, quattro ragazzi - Lorenzo, soprannominato Shakes, Michael, John e Tommy - compiono una bravata ai danni di un venditore greco di hot dog causando quasi la morte di un anziano all'uscita della metropolitana. Condannati a 18 mesi da scontare in riformatorio, i ragazzi subiscono atroci violenze psichiche e fisiche da parte di alcuni agenti di custodia, tra cui spiccano il sadico Nokes e Ferguson. Un sacerdote, padre Bobby Carrillo (Robert De Niro), in visita, tenta di dare coraggio a Leonardo, che prima di uscire viene sottoposto con i suoi amici ad un ultima atroce notte di sevizie. Dopo molti anni, nel 1981, nel pub di Hell's Kitchen, Tommy e John, divenuti gangster e killer, incontrano Nokes che sta pranzando...
