Louisiana. Il detective Dave Robicheaux è sulle tracce di un serial killer che uccide giovani donne. Spostandosi da una scena del crimine all'altra, Dave incontra un affascinante star di Hollywood: Elrod Sykes. Sykes è in città per girare il suo prossimo film con il supporto della criminalità locale e del boss Baby Feet Balboni. Questi racconta a Dave di aver avvistato un corpo in una palude: il cadavere decomposto di un uomo nero in catene. La scoperta fa sì che i ricordi riemergano dal passato di Dave, il quale intuisce che i casi sono collegati. Ma mentre Dave si avvicina all'assassino, l'assassino si avvicina alla famiglia di Dave...
