William McNamara (Bruce Willis), detenuto in un campo di prigionia tedesco, è un uomo discendente da una famiglia che vanta una solida tradizione militare da quattro generazioni. Come ufficiale americano più alto in grado, è lui a comandare i suoi compagni di prigionia e a tenere vivo il senso del coraggio e dell'onore. Responsabile del campo di prigionia è il colonnello tedesco Werner Visser (Marcel Iures), un ufficiale della Luftwaffe severo e spietato, ma dotato di un’aristocratica formazione culturale. Un giorno viene inviato al campo il tenente americano Thomas Hart (Colin Farrell), un giovane preoccupato più della propria sopravvivenza che della propria missione da soldato, su cui pesa il sospetto di aver svelato ai tedeschi alcune importanti informazioni sugli alleati. Lo scontro tra McNamara e Hart è inevitabile e, sebbene sia un tenente, Hart viene relegato dal colonnello nella baracca destinata alle truppe di soldati.
