Una coppia di coniugi - Quentin e Tracy - eredita una tenuta e un antico castello, dove va a trascorrere le vacanze. Al marito capita spesso di subire trasformazioni psichiche: in lui si reincarna un uomo vissuto nel Settecento, che commise adulterio con la cognata (per tale motivo e per stregoneria, l'adultera venne impiccata). Il reincarnato tenta varie volte di uccidere Tracy, la quale viene identificata con la donna che fu la principale responsabile dell'impiccagione dell'amante. Quando sembra essere stato definitivamente neutralizzato, il reincarnato riprende le sembianze di Quentin.
