Scozia 1886. Il vecchio visconte di Greystoke assiste - insieme all'imponente schieramento dell'intera servitù - alla partenza per l'Africa del figlio Clayton con la nuora Alice. L'avventura va male ai due giovani sposi sbattuti da un naufragio sulle coste occidentali dell'Africa, tentano di sopravvivere alla Robinson in attesa di soccorsi, dentro un rifugio improvvisato, dove Alice muore dando alla luce un bimbo, Jack. Quasi subito dopo Clayton viene dilaniato da un feroce scimmione, il capo-branco Silverbeard, mentre il neonato è prodigiosamente salvato da Kala, una scimmia femmina, che lo alleva al posto del suo scimmiottino morto. Jack - ormai chiamato Tarzan - si adegua all'habitat e al modo di vivere delle scimmie, cresce forte e sano e riesce ad imporsi sul feroce Silverbeard e al suo branco, divenendo Signore delle scimmie. Guidato da un istinto umano non ancora pervertito dalla civiltà, gli capita un giorno di soccorrere uno scienziato belga, Philippe D'Arnot, che - alla testa di una spedizione scientifica del British Museum di Londra - giace ferito dai pigmei. Col giovane Jack, D'Arnot scopre il rifugio dei naufraghi Clayton e i documenti delle nobili origini del suo selvaggio soccorritore. Fa quello che può per dirozzarlo e lo riconduce in Scozia nel castello avito, dove è affettuosamente accolto dal nonno.
