1955: Frank e April Wheeler sono una giovane coppia del Connecticut, che abita nel quartiere residenziale di Revolutionary Hill. I due si sentono molto diversi dall'ambiente borghese e conformista che pare caratterizzare il loro vicinato, ma la loro vita è tutt'altro che perfetta: April sogna di diventare un'attrice affermata e trasferirsi a Parigi, mentre Frank sopporta un lavoro che detesta solo grazie all'aiuto della bottiglia e alla relazione clandestina che ha con una collega.
