Nel XIV secolo Firenze la citt dei piaceri, sontuosa e propsera, una citt d'arte e cultura dove gli abitanti si godono la vita. Ma nel 1346 tutto cambia. La citt devastata da un flagello che non lascia scampo, "La Peste Nera". Lorenzo de Lamberti (Hayden Christensen), giovane e innocente avventuriero, preso di mira dal perfido Gerbino (Tim Roth) decide di scappare dalla citt trovando rifugio in un convento dove diventa giardiniere. Pampinea Anastagi (Mischa Barton), figlia unica di una famiglia ricca e rispettata, si ritrova di colpo orfana a causa della peste. Gerbino che vorrebbe mettere le mani su di lei e sui suoi soldi, minaccia di confiscarle la casa se non accetta di sposarlo. Pampinea riesce ad opporsi alla richiesta confidandogli che stata promessa in sposa a un Conte russo gi in viaggio verso Firenze...
