Nel corso della guerra di Secessione, un caporale nordista, Jonathan McBurney, viene ferito e abbandonato sul territorio nemico. L'uomo viene raccolto da Emily, una bambina ospite di un collegio femminile diretto da una zitella miss Martha. Jonathan viene curato dalle premurose donne, ma è anche consapevole del fatto che, una volta guarito, dovrà essere consegnato ai Sudisti. Jonathan, unico uomo di casa, non ci ha messo molto ad attirare su di sé le simpatie delle ospiti del collegio. Stravedono per lui Martha ed Edwina, l'insegnante di francese.
