Ideato come una sequenza di cinque differenti vicende che si intrecciano simultaneamente, il film si snoda attraverso tre continenti e relativi idiomi. Ogni storia converge sul fugace incontro tra un tassista e il suo cliente nel corso della notte e sul rapporto, limitato nel tempo e nello spazio ma non per questo meno sincero, che ne scaturisce. Il film comincia a Los Angeles nel momento in cui svaniscono le ultime luci del giorno, per poi trasferirsi nel cuore della notte di New York, Parigi, Roma ed infine Helsinki, con l'ultimo episodio che si conclude con il sorgere del sole.
