Cal Jamison, consulente psichiatrico a servizio della polizia, scosso per la perdita recente della moglie, fulminata da un elettrodomestico, si trasferisce a New York col figlio Chris di sette anni. Qui viene incaricato di collaborare alle indagini della polizia su una serie di misteriosi delitti, le cui vittime, sempre atrocemente straziate, sono spesso bambini. Viene così a conoscere i riti magici e orrendemente cruenti della "santerìa", una specie di superstizione religiosa di origine afro-spagnola, da poco diffusa negli Stati Uniti.
