Nella squadra di baseball di seconda divisione della città di Durham viene ingaggiato "Crash" Davis, un veterano sul viale del tramonto con il compito di occuparsi del nuovo talento appena acquistato, il lanciatore Ebby Calvin "Nuke" La Loosh, giocatore dotato di grande braccio ma poco cervello.
Anche Annie Savoy, insegnante fanatica del gioco (tanto da avere il baseball come religione) si occuperà di Ebby avendo la particolarità di dedicarsi anima e corpo ad ogni inizio stagione ad un diverso giocatore.
