Los Angeles, metà anni '80. Dopo aver perso il lavoro in un supermarket ed aver scoperto che i genitori hanno donato il suo fondo universitario in beneficienza, il giovane punk Otto Maddox viene reclutato da un'agenzia di recupero auto impegnata nella ricerca, che vede protagonista anche una strana donna dell'FBI, di una preziosa Chevrolet Malibu del 1964, valutata per migliaia di dollari e con un misterioso contenuto nel portabagagli.
