1941. Il giovane luogotenente Nikolay Ivushkin viene messo a capo di una missione suicida con un carro armato T-34 e un piccolo equipaggio di soldati per bloccare un gruppo di carri armati tedeschi. La missione ha successo ma Nikolay viene catturato e imprigionato in un campo di concentramento in Germania. Quattro anni dopo i tedeschi gli ordinano di addestrare una squadra di carri armati composta da prigionieri di guerra in modo che i tedeschi possano esercitarsi proprio contro di loro. Nikolay accetta di mettersi alla guida di un T-34 semi distrutto, ma solo perché ha in mente un piano molto più grande: una fuga audace e attentamente pianificata.
