John Hobbes (Denzel Washington), detective molto stimato della squadra omicidi, e il suo collega Jonesy (John Goodman), dopo aver catturato un serial killer satanico ed aver presenziato al suo processo, assistono alla sua esecuzione. Subito dopo, però, una nuova serie di omicidi commessi con la stessa tecnica del killer mette in difficoltà i due poliziotti. Il tenente Stanton, loro superiore, pensa che questi delitti potrebbero essere opera di un imitatore ma anche di un poliziotto corrotto. Vengono alla luce prove che coinvolgono Hobbes negli omicidi. Ricercato, il detective cerca di capire che cosa sta succedendo.
