Il caso del serial killer chiamato "la mano di Dio" sembra destinato a rimanere insoluto fino a quando l'agente dell'FBI Wesley Doyle, coordinatore delle indagini sul serial killer, si trova di fronte Fenton Meiks (Matthew McConaughey), che sostiene di essere il fratello dell'omicida, sulle prime è molto diffidente, ma Fenton racconta a Doyle una storia molto più complicata di quello che sembra.
