Jack Walsh (De Niro) è un ex poliziotto di Chicago che vive a Los Angeles e riceve incarichi saltuari da Eddie Moscone il titolare di una agenzia che anticipa cauzioni in campo giudiziario. Jack accetta di ritrovare un tranquillo ragioniere, Jonathan Mardukas detto "Il Duca", che ha sottratto a un boss mafioso, di cui curava l'amministrazione, 15 milioni di dollari, per poi donarli in beneficenza. Con i 100.000 dollari promessigli dall'agenzia per riportarlo a Los Angeles, Jack pensa di abbandonare rischi e fatiche e di metter su un ristorante. Dopo aver catturato Jonathan, Jack però scopre di essere tallonato da due scagnozzi del boss, dall'FBI e da un altro investigatore, Marvin Dorfler.Durante una delle rocambolesche fughe, Jack riesce ad impadronirsi della tessera dell'FBI dell'agente Alonso Mosely...
